The annual National Geographic Bee was held on May 24, and this year's winner is Tine Valencic from Colleyville, Texas. Valencic won $25,000 scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, along with a lifetime membership to the National Geographic Society. Tine, 13, is a 7th grader whose family is from Slovenia. He was ecstatic when Jeopardy! show host Alex Trebek handed him the $25,000 check, and said, "It's great! I don't know how to describe it!" The Bee is held every year and is open to all 4th-8th graders. To win the bee, Valencic answered the following question: "Thousands of mountain climbers and trekkers rely on Sherpas to aid their ascent to Mt. Everest. The Southern part of Mt. Everest is in which Nepalese national park?" The answer? Sagarmatha National Park; most people can't even say the word. Valencic said it, and it won him $25,000.
